David Niemann

German conductor David Niemann is establishing himself as one of the most promising conductors of his generation. Second prize winner of the 2015 Malko Conducting Competition, in February 2015 he was appointed Assistant Conductor at the Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier, where he worked alongside chief conductor Michael Schønwandt from 2015 until 2018.

Recent highlights have included a special interdisciplinary project with Junge Deutsche Philharmonie featuring new commissions with the most renowned artists of the German-speaking poetry slam scene; Schoenberg’s A Survivor from Warsaw, paired with Beethoven’s Choral Symphony, to open the Barcelona concert season of the Valles Symphony in the iconic Palau de la Musica. He has returned to Qatar Philharmonic, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse for a series of projects with Jean-François Zygel, Luxembourg Philharmonic and to Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier for concerts at the Opéra Comédie and in the region. Debuts have included concerts with Opera National de Lorraine and Orchestre Lyrique Région Avignon Provence, where he conducted an all-Brahms programme and school’s concerts.

This season’s highlights include visits to Qatar Philharmonic and preparing Sibelius’ Symphony No. 7 and Mahler Symphony No. 7 with the Guildhall Orchestra in London and Thomas Søndergård. He also conducts the Ensemble Modern at the recital hall of Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie.
