COMPETITION 2021

The newly designed and internationally oriented International Hindemith Viola Competition was held for the first time in October 2021 in cooperation with the Munich University of Music and Theatre and the Walter Witte Viola Foundation. All live rounds took place in the Great Concert Hall of the University in Munich.

We were delighted to receive 102 applications from candidates of 29 different nationalities! We eagerly awaited the result of the preliminary jury! They agreed to admit 20 participants to the live rounds, who were informed on 28 May 2021.

The 20 participants who qualified for the live rounds have confirmed their participation and have been presented here individually.

The semi-finals and final could be followed via livestream.

FIRST LIVE ROUND
After two intensive, exciting and highly interesting days and 17 candidates who finally competed in the competition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich from 102 applications and an anonymised video pre-selection, the jury was able to agree on the following six candidates for the semi-final:

Njord Kårason Fossnes, Alona Khlevna, Ionel Ungureanu, Carla Usberti, Yuri Yoon and Emiko Yuasa!!!
We congratulate these great young musicians on this success!


SEMIFINALE:
A highly exciting semi-final with many exciting interpretations has produced 3 finalists who played the final on 20 October in a chamber music and an orchestral round:

FINAL:
On the evening of 20 October, after 6 intensive, highly interesting, exciting and top-class competition days, the jury announced the following result after the chamber music and orchestra rounds of the final:

First prize went to Emiko Yuasa

Second prize went to Njord Kårason Fossnes

The third prize went to Carla Usberti

The special Walter Witte prize of € 1,000 went to Alona Khlevna

The audience award in the amount of € 500 went to Emiko Yuasa
